INFO ABOUT VLNA

First issue of VLNA, magazine for young, innovative and experimental culture from Slovakia and rest of the world, was published in winter 1999. VLNA is quite conservative in the structure: divided into 6 parts (film, literature, media music, theatre, visual arts), each ruled by its own editor, it concentrates itself on the latest significant trends in particular art-fields. This "conservativism" allows the board of editors-specialists to discuss various topics concerning their fields, to find cross-lines (vectors) and set multiple view to the topic. Important man in the discussion is graphic designer. Since the beginning VLNA defines itself through specific graphic design, which creates not only image of the magazine, but also possibilities for the young graphic designers to present their work, linked to the specific content of VLNA. Fruitfull discussions of the editors board with graphic designer lead to intermedial experiments (text-graphic performances, comics etc).

VLNA is the only Slovak cultural (not specifically theatrical) magazine regullary publishing full length dramas - either Slovak or translated ones (first translations by young translators). We are also publishing original fiction writing and essays. Recent aim of VLNA is to support young Slovak essay writing, music and multimedia. From VLNA6 we are starting to publish CDs of new Slovak music (with Deadred label) and multimedia works. In VLNA 8 we published CD with the contemporary Polish music.

NGO VLNA, publisher of magazine VLNA is not only publishing house, but also organizer of cultural events linked to VLNA (stage reading of the plays, music and video presentations, fiction and poetry readings, discussion).

To sum up: VLNA profiles itself as place for young emerging, innovative writers and critics, essayists, philosophers, musicians, visual artists. We prefer creating opportunities for Slovak artists to nondialogical import of abroad culture. Our aim is to present new faces and to communicate with every impulse and to cross the borders of printed medium - both inward (text - visual) and outward (magazine - other media).
